Caused to Question

Read Luke 18:35-43

35 As Jesus approached Jericho, a blind man was sitting by the roadside begging. 36 When he heard the crowd going by, he asked what was happening. 37 They told him, “Jesus of Nazareth is passing by.”

38 He called out, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!”

39 Those who led the way rebuked him and told him to be quiet, but he shouted all the more, “Son of David, have mercy on me!”

40 Jesus stopped and ordered the man to be brought to him. When he came near, Jesus asked him, 41 “What do you want me to do for you?”

“Lord, I want to see,” he replied.

42 Jesus said to him, “Receive your sight; your faith has healed you.” 43 Immediately he received his sight and followed Jesus, praising God. When all the people saw it, they also praised God.

Big Idea: Our pursuit of Jesus causes others to question who He is.

The blind man sitting on the road was doing what blind men in Jesus’ time did. He was in the location that blind men went. His identity was marked by being blind. And his daily behaviors and actions were a result of his blindness. People who are far from Jesus are the same. Their actions and behaviors are consistent with their sinful nature and their identity. They don’t have the ability to change themselves or act against their very nature.

Ephesians 2:2-3 says, “You used to live in sin, just like the rest of the world, obeying the devil—the commander of the powers in the unseen world. He is the spirit at work in the hearts of those who refuse to obey God. All of us used to live that way, following the passionate desires and inclinations of our sinful nature. By our very nature we were subject to God’s anger, just like everyone else.”

This blind man’s life changed when he heard the crowd moving in front of Him. He didn’t understand what was happening or where they were going, but their movement towards Jesus caused him to question. In the same way, as we live in pursuit of Jesus to know Him and follow Him daily, those lost around us are unsettled. They don’t know where we are going or what we’re doing, but inside of them is birthed a question that needs an answer.

Ephesians 2:4-8 says, “But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions—it is by grace you have been saved. And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus, in order that in the coming ages he might show the incomparable riches of his grace, expressed in his kindness to us in Christ Jesus.”

We can’t save anyone. Like the blind man, each must personally come to Christ crying out for mercy recognizing their need for Him. But our lives and our pursuit of Jesus can cause others to stir and begin to question for themselves. And this questioning can bring them face to face with Jesus who changes everything… their identity, pursuits, daily behaviors, future, and their very name. Run after Jesus today and know others are watching as God uses your life to display His love and mercy to the world!
