Looking for Water

Read Psalm 63:1-5

You, God, are my God,
    earnestly I seek you;
I thirst for you,
    my whole being longs for you,
in a dry and parched land
    where there is no water.

I have seen you in the sanctuary
    and beheld your power and your glory.
Because your love is better than life,
    my lips will glorify you.
I will praise you as long as I live,
    and in your name I will lift up my hands.
I will be fully satisfied as with the richest of foods;
    with singing lips my mouth will praise you.

Big Idea: You can’t find true satisfaction in created things.

Last night we were throwing the ball in the backyard for our puppy. It’s getting hotter now and after a time of running back and forth, our puppy started to pant. Her tongue was hanging out and her mouth was open. At that moment, thirst overtook her and all she wanted was water. No ball or toy was going to distract her. She had a singular desire and need… water.

Psalm 41:1 says, “As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, my God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God.” As I reflected on this Psalm this morning, I asked myself the question… am I that way with God? Do I run to the living water to satisfy the longings of my heart?

We were made by God for God. And because of this, the deepest longings of our hearts can only be met by Him. God rebuked His people in Jeremiah 2:13 for forsaking the living water and digging, “their own cisterns, broken cisterns that cannot hold water.” When we approach a created person or thing and expect to find perfect love, lasting joy, and significant purpose, we are left still thirsty. The person hurts, disappoints, forgets, or fails us. The thing we buy breaks, becomes outdated, and doesn’t bring us the lasting joy we expected. The job doesn’t appreciate, recognize, or bring us the significance we hoped. It is unfair to expect anything or anyone to satisfy those longings within us that only God was meant to fill.

So today- let’s examine our cisterns. Am I seeking water elsewhere expecting to find satisfaction? Let’s take our honest hearts to God.
