The Restless Heart
Background Story: Isaiah was a prophet who communicated God’s words to the people.
Read Isaiah 55: 1-7
“Is anyone thirsty?
Come and drink—
even if you have no money!
Come, take your choice of wine or milk—
it’s all free!
2 Why spend your money on food that does not give you strength?
Why pay for food that does you no good?
Listen to me, and you will eat what is good.
You will enjoy the finest food.
3 “Come to me with your ears wide open.
Listen, and you will find life.
I will make an everlasting covenant with you.
I will give you all the unfailing love I promised to David.
4 See how I used him to display my power among the peoples.
I made him a leader among the nations.
5 You also will command nations you do not know,
and peoples unknown to you will come running to obey,
because I, the Lord your God,
the Holy One of Israel, have made you glorious.”
6 Seek the Lord while you can find him.
Call on him now while he is near.
7 Let the wicked change their ways
and banish the very thought of doing wrong.
Let them turn to the Lord that he may have mercy on them.
Yes, turn to our God, for he will forgive generously.
Big Idea: We were made to be satisfied in God alone.
Look around and what do you see? Everyone running around trying to find the secret thing that will satisfy them. They marry a person and still feel empty…so they marry another. They purchase a home only to desire a bigger one… maybe a bigger house will be the answer. They eat a meal at a fancy restaurant, and on the ride home, are already looking for the next place to eat. They train or rehearse for years to win the Olympics, the Superbowl, a Grammy, an Oscar, or the World Cup… only to put their award on the shelf where it collects dust. The heart of man is never satisfied. Why? Because we continue to try to fill our emptiness with insufficient substitutes.
You were not simply born as a result of your parents. A divine Creator made you. He fashioned you and formed you for one purpose and one purpose only. You were made by God to dwell in relationship with God. The inmost longing of our heart begs to be known, to be seen, and to be understood. But this knowing does not happen in relationship with people who fail and forget us. This seeing does not happen in fame or success which passes and fades.
The reason our hearts feel restless is because we were created for more! More than just day-to-day stress and acquiring more and more things. We were made for Him! That is your divine purpose. That is your calling. All of the riches, love, and fame of this world will never satisfy the heart that was made to dwell with Him.
