Undefeated God
Background Story: Samson was born to be a judge for Israel to defeat their enemies and to be set apart for the Lord. In Judges 14 and 15, Samson marries a woman who is later killed and burned by the Philistines.
Read Judges 15:7-20
“Because you did this,” Samson vowed, “I won’t rest until I take my revenge on you!” 8 So he attacked the Philistines with great fury and killed many of them. Then he went to live in a cave in the rock of Etam.
9 The Philistines retaliated by setting up camp in Judah and spreading out near the town of Lehi. 10 The men of Judah asked the Philistines, “Why are you attacking us?”
The Philistines replied, “We’ve come to capture Samson. We’ve come to pay him back for what he did to us.”
11 So 3,000 men of Judah went down to get Samson at the cave in the rock of Etam. They said to Samson, “Don’t you realize the Philistines rule over us? What are you doing to us?”
But Samson replied, “I only did to them what they did to me.”
12 But the men of Judah told him, “We have come to tie you up and hand you over to the Philistines.”
“All right,” Samson said. “But promise that you won’t kill me yourselves.”
13 “We will only tie you up and hand you over to the Philistines,” they replied. “We won’t kill you.” So they tied him up with two new ropes and brought him up from the rock.
14 As Samson arrived at Lehi, the Philistines came shouting in triumph. But the Spirit of the Lord came powerfully upon Samson, and he snapped the ropes on his arms as if they were burnt strands of flax, and they fell from his wrists. 15 Then he found the jawbone of a recently killed donkey. He picked it up and killed 1,000 Philistines with it. 16 Then Samson said,
“With the jawbone of a donkey,
I’ve piled them in heaps!
With the jawbone of a donkey,
I’ve killed a thousand men!”
17 When he finished his boasting, he threw away the jawbone; and the place was named Jawbone Hill.
18 Samson was now very thirsty, and he cried out to the Lord, “You have accomplished this great victory by the strength of your servant. Must I now die of thirst and fall into the hands of these pagans?” 19 So God caused water to gush out of a hollow in the ground at Lehi, and Samson was revived as he drank. Then he named that place “The Spring of the One Who Cried Out,” and it is still in Lehi to this day.
20 Samson judged Israel for twenty years during the period when the Philistines dominated the land.
Big Idea: God will equip and sustain those that call upon Him.
When God is with you, the number of enemies that come against you doesn’t matter. Samson not only faced the entire Philistine army, but Judah (his own people) helped bind him in ropes. The text says they were, “new ropes” meaning they were incredibly strong, had never been used, and were guaranteed to work. In life, we can never predict where struggles, turmoil, and attack will come from. But in ALL times and ALL circumstances, we serve a God bigger than our foe. When the Holy Spirit filled Samson with power in verse 14, those unfailable ropes snapped, “as if they were burnt strands of flax, and they fell from his wrists.” For who can stand against the Lord Almighty?
Once the enemy was defeated, Samson found himself depleted. He was thirsty and worn out and the scripture says that he cried out to the Lord. In your hardest moments and biggest struggles in life, God will sustain you if you cry out to Him. And that water that comes from God isn’t a slow drip, barely enough to meet the need. The Bible says that it “gushed out,” being more than enough to fill and overflow the present need. And that water from God made Samson feel “revived.” Another translation says, “he felt strong again.” That is the Lord… the One who revives, sustains, and strengthens us!
There is not a possible situation, problem, or circumstance in which God is not able to equip you or sustain you if you cry out to Him! The strength you require is found in Him. Read these promises from Psalm 145:13-19 and let them sink into your heart increasing your faith in our Undefeated God!
“The Lord always keeps his promises; he is gracious in all he does. The Lord helps the fallen and lifts those bent beneath their loads. The eyes of all look to you in hope; you give them their food as they need it. When you open your hand, you satisfy the hunger and thirst of every living thing. The Lord is righteous in everything he does; he is filled with kindness. The Lord is close to all who call on him, yes, to all who call on him in truth. He grants the desires of those who fear him; he hears their cries for help and rescues them.”
