Come Alive
Read Luke 7:11-17
11 Soon afterward, Jesus went to a town called Nain, and his disciples and a large crowd went along with him. 12 As he approached the town gate, a dead person was being carried out—the only son of his mother, and she was a widow. And a large crowd from the town was with her. 13 When the Lord saw her, his heart went out to her and he said, “Don’t cry.”
14 Then he went up and touched the bier they were carrying him on, and the bearers stood still. He said, “Young man, I say to you, get up!” 15 The dead man sat up and began to talk, and Jesus gave him back to his mother.
16 They were all filled with awe and praised God. “A great prophet has appeared among us,” they said. “God has come to help his people.” 17 This news about Jesus spread throughout Judea and the surrounding country.
Big Idea: Jesus is calling this generation to come alive.
There is a spirit of despair and hopelessness plaguing this generation of teens. This feeling that nothing will change, nothing will improve, and it’s better to give up. It’s everywhere you look. Families distraught not knowing how to help their teen feeling absolutely helpless. Teens unable to see out of the dark hole they find themselves trapped in.
As I was reading this passage, I thought of the mom walking along side the casket of her son, completely broken and alone. I thought of the crowd trying best to comfort her. I thought of the son, lying helpless in his place of death unable to rescue himself. But then there was Jesus. He is not like us. He came filled with compassion and love and saw the mother in her grief. He saw the crowd in their tears. He saw the death of a child too young. And His heart was moved with compassion to act. With one touch and one word, He called that which was dead back to life. And in that moment, each was restored.
Jesus is calling this generation back to life. He is saying to each teen drowning in despair and hopelessness, “Young man (or woman), I say to you, get up.” In Him is LIFE… full and abundant life. Today let’s join together as a body of believers and pray for those trapped in darkness and ask God how we can be a vessel of compassion, love and mercy today.
Lord, we pray for the teen filled with despair and hopeless. They are completely unable to pull themselves out of this place but You are not. We cry out for them that they would look up and see Jesus, seated on the throne, high and above every worry, fear, and problem. There is nothing greater than You. We stand in the gap for these teens crying out for their freedom, hope, and deliverance today. We pray for their parents and families for supernatural wisdom and peace. We know Your heart is moved with compassion and that You love these teens and their families. We surrender ourselves to Your work. We pray You would give us words of hope pointing each person to Jesus. Only You have the power to save, so we commit these teens, their families, and ourselves to You for Your glory. Let them declare like this passage, “God has come to help his people.” In Jesus mighty name, Amen.
